Understanding South African Income Tax

South African income tax is a direct tax levied on individuals and companies based on their taxable income. The system is managed by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) under the Income Tax Act, No. 58 of 1962. Income tax applies to all South African residents on their worldwide income, while non-residents are taxed only on income derived from South African sources. Individuals are subject to a progressive tax system, meaning higher income levels are taxed at higher rates. For the 2026/2027 tax year, tax rates for individuals range from 18% to 45%, with updated thresholds and rebates reducing the overall tax burden.

How SARS PAYE is Calculated

Income tax for employees is collected through the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system, where employers deduct tax directly from salaries each month and remit it to SARS. To calculate PAYE:

  1. Annualize the monthly salary to determine annual income.
  2. Apply the SARS tax brackets to calculate annual tax.
  3. Subtract tax rebates based on the taxpayer's age:
    • Under 65: Primary rebate
    • 65-74: Primary + Secondary rebate
    • 75 and older: Primary + Secondary + Tertiary rebate
  4. Divide the annual tax by 12 to determine the monthly PAYE.
  5. Deduct UIF contributions (1% of income, capped at R177.12 per month) to arrive at the final net salary.

This process ensures that taxpayers pay the correct amount of tax over the course of the year.

About the Income Tax Calculator

The Income Tax Calculator provided here is designed to help South African employees, employers, and self-employed individuals estimate their monthly tax obligations. By entering your income, selecting whether it is monthly or annual, and specifying your age group, the calculator applies the current SARS 2026/2027 tax tables to compute:

  • Gross Monthly Salary
  • Monthly PAYE Tax
  • UIF Deduction
  • Annual Tax Liability
  • Net Monthly Salary

This tool simplifies tax planning, allowing users to understand how much tax they owe and what their take-home pay will be. It follows the official SARS methodology and is ideal for budgeting, payroll planning, and ensuring compliance with South African tax laws.
